Key Stage 5 overview

Pupils study the CYG Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure at The Y Club, Castlefield Hotel in Manchester. The course lasts one year and pupils study for two days per week.

Learners will cover:

Knowledge and understanding relating to the qualification:

• functions of the skeletal, muscular and cardio-respiratory systems

• requirements of a healthy diet

• different exercise and fitness activities and facilities

• the workplace: risks and hazards, employee rights and responsibilities

• how to support a leader of a sports or active leisure activity


Skills relating to the qualification:

• review own performance when taking part in sport

• plan, use and review own fitness programme

• assist in planning and delivering a sports activity

• set goals for a work placement

The qualification will be facilitated by a sport and fitness professionally qualified tutor who will deliver and combination of theory and practical learning. The tutor will deliver half a day within the school and a full day will be spent at the Y Club each week giving the learners the experience of an active leisure setting. We will work with learners to access work experience placements in the sport and active leisure industry that will complement their learning.

We are also offering learners the opportunity to take optional National Pool Lifeguard and First Aid Qualifications. This course will be delivered over a week sometime in May or June by Trafford College
