‘The sixth-form provision allows students to continue thriving, both academically and socially, into their young adulthood’
Oakwood Academy 6th Form strives to prepare our students for long term meaningful employment through a robust curriculum including functional skills, vocational options, creative arts, employability and work experience. This gives our students the best possible chance to move in to paid employment or long term meaningful volunteering and have the personal and social skills to be as independent as possible.
Oakwood Academy 6th Form continues to go from strength to strength, now in its seventh year, we have over 60 students from all over Greater Manchester. Having outgrown our humble beginnings, the 6th Form has now moved to Media City to its own bespoke and secure space at UTC Media City. This gives us the great balance of the wrap around support you would expect from an Outstanding SEND school with fantastic resources in a modern college environment. The move also allows us to work with local employers at Media City and continue to build strong work placement links.
All students at Oakwood Academy 6th Form will access work experience with many attending weekly independent placements throughout the academic year. This allows them to build the essential skills, knowledge and experience for long term employment. We have a fantastic database of employers including childcare, retail, sport, media, leisure and hospitality and catering. These work placements form the basis of our Supported Internship programme where students in their optional third year access work placements for three or four days a week before moving in to full time employment or apprenticeships at the completion of their Internship.
We have a rigorous curriculum that gives our students the best possible opportunity to find full time work including:
- Maths Functional Skills and GCSE resits
- English Functional Skills and GCSE resits
- ICT & Media
- Chef School (Catering)
- Graphic Art
- BTEC Art
Independent Living & Preparation for Adulthood
- Road Wise
- Food Wise
- AoPE (Award of Personal Effectiveness) and ASDAN Silver and Gold Award
All students will get the opportunity to attend a week long residential at Ribby Hall during their time in 6th Form. This is a fantastic opportunity to spend some time away with their friends.
